EXHIBITION CATALOG: THE ARTIST’S QUESTION… ANSWERED IN FIBER.
Creating a work of art begins with a question. The artist might ask: What idea is important to me to communicate? What concept do I want to explore? What emotions do I want to experience and evoke in the viewer? What interests me? Or perhaps the artist might contemplate: Why do we …? What would happen if …? What is the meaning of …?
Each work of art will resolve (or examine) the question(s) asked by the artist. Answers will evolve differently as artists create compositions which address their unique queries. Content of the work may be representational or abstract. The method may be narrative, commentary, or purely aesthetic.
Artists in SAQA’s US Gulf regions – Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas – were invited to respond to this call for artwork. From the works submitted, Juror Zak Foster selected 29 quilts for exhibition. The artists represented work in fiber and fabric, using the rich and varied techniques of fiber art to create artistic responses to their artist’s questions.
