A sportswoman, academician, police officer, lawyer, activist and a reformer are the various public roles that Kiran Bedi has fulfilled in the course of her life. She was born on 9th June, 1949 in the city of Amritsar, Punjab. She was brought up in an amalgamation of Hindu-Sikh traditions and was sent to a Christian School.
Bedi was born into a business family. She was inspired to play tennis following the footsteps of her father and won many awards. The NCC also awarded her the NCC Cadet Officer Award in 1968. After completing her Master’s degree, she joined, Khalsa College, Amritsar as a lecturer in Political Science. Within two years at this job, she cleared the UPSC examination and underwent her police training at National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie.
Success for many may mean an entry into the ranks of IAS, IPS, IFS etc. Ms. Bedi’s story is reminiscent of the idea that our lives are full of uncertainty. One doesn’t get what one expects in life, despite having sound, logical, rational and concrete reasoning. A personality like her was always shrouded with controversies. Her story tells us that it is not always the political will that has the potential to bring a lasting change in society.
